形見の品と言うと、指輪や時計が一般的でしょうか。
もう何年も前になるけれど、
私が家族と一緒に、住人の居なくなった祖父母の家を片付けに行った時に、
形見としてもらって来たのはこんなものたち。
使いかけの方眼紙と消しゴムの擦り減ったシャープペンシル、
旅先から持ち帰って溜まった小さな小さな歯磨き粉、お年玉記念切手、三社祭の団扇と手ぬぐい、
二人分のお味噌汁を作るのに調度良い大きさの鍋、流行遅れの食器、
鮮やかなブルーのコンパクト、綺麗なままのモンチッチ、大小の茶箱、
普段着用の着物（これは私が二十歳になるまで長生きしてくれた曾祖母のもの。彼女が着ていた姿を今でも良く覚えています。）、鰹節削り器、碁石、
二人が初めて飛行機に乗った時の写真、私が旅先から祖父母に宛てて送った絵葉書・・・・。
祖父母がこれらを買ったりもらったりした時の満足した笑顔や、使っていた日常が、
このこまごまとした「物」とともに私の日常にやってきて、
今も日々を一緒に過ごしています。
私にとっては、宝石よりもずっと価値のある宝物。
When you say "someone's memento", I guess that generally means jewellery or a wrist watch.
When my family and I visited and cleaned my grandparents' house which had lost its inhabitants, I gathered these things and brought them home.
A partially used graph paper pad, a propelling pencil with a worn-out eraser, tiny toothpaste tubes from their trips, commemorative stamps, fans and towels from Sanja festival, just the right size soup pot to make miso soup for two persons, unfashionable tableware, a beautiful blue compact, "Monchhichi", tea chests, Kimono ( I still remember my great grandmother wearing these) , a cutter box for dried bonito, stones to play "go", a picture of their first flight and postcards that I sent them when I was abroad.
I've been keeping these little things as mementos of my grandparents.They came to my home with memories of my grandparents' daily life and now I'm living with these memories.
These tiny things are more valuable than precious stones.
